Crawl Space Restoration & Cleanup

Crawl spaces are dark, sheltered and out of sight, which is exactly why skunks, raccoons, opossums and rodents like them. By the time you notice a smell coming up through the floor, an animal may have been denning under your home for months. Precision Wildlife Removal removes the animals, cleans out the waste and nesting, deodorizes the space, and seals it so they can’t get back in. Call (888) 346-8228, 24/7.

Signs of animals in your crawl space

  • A musky, urine or skunk odor coming up through floors or heating vents.
  • Scratching or movement under the floor, especially at night.
  • A torn or displaced crawl space vent cover or access door.
  • Digging along the foundation, or a burrow next to the house.
  • Insulation hanging down from the floor joists, or a torn vapor barrier.
  • A sudden bad smell, which can mean an animal has died under the house.

What animals leave behind

Animals in a crawl space leave droppings and urine on the vapor barrier and soil, pull down insulation for nesting, and sometimes damage ductwork. The contamination can carry bacteria and parasites, add moisture, and send odors into your home through the floor and HVAC system.

Our crawl space cleanup process

1. Remove the animals

We find out what’s living there and remove it with a one-way door or live trapping. In spring, we check for young before closing anything. See skunk removal and raccoon removal.

2. Inspect and document

We assess the vapor barrier, insulation, ductwork and soil, and give you a clear estimate.

3. Remove contaminated material

Technicians in protective gear remove droppings, nesting debris, and damaged insulation or vapor barrier. If an animal died under the house, we remove it.

4. Sanitize and deodorize

We treat the space to neutralize odors and the scent trails that draw other animals.

5. Restore

We replace the vapor barrier and insulation as needed.

6. Seal the crawl space

We secure vent covers and access doors and install barriers at the foundation so animals can’t dig back in. See wildlife exclusion and prevention.

Dead animal odor under the house

A dead animal under the floor is one of the worst smells a homeowner can deal with, and it doesn’t go away quickly on its own. We locate and remove the carcass, clean and deodorize the area, and find how the animal got in so it doesn’t happen again.

Crawl space FAQs

How did an animal get under my house?

Usually through a loose or damaged vent cover, a gap in the foundation, or under a porch or addition that connects to the crawl space. Skunks and groundhogs will also dig under a foundation wall.

Can the smell get into my living space?

Yes. Air from the crawl space moves up into the house, and ductwork running through the crawl space can carry odors.

Can I clean it myself?

Crawl spaces are tight and dirty, and animal waste can carry disease. It’s safer to have a crew with protective equipment handle it, and the animals need to be out and the space sealed first anyway.

How much does crawl space cleanup cost?

It depends on the size of the space and how much material needs to be removed and replaced. Inspection and estimate are free.
