Signs you have mice or rats

Rodents are mostly active at night and stay out of sight, so the first clues are usually what they leave behind:

  • Droppings along walls, in cabinets and drawers, under sinks, behind appliances, or on attic insulation. Mouse droppings are small and pointed; rat droppings are larger.
  • Scratching or scurrying in walls and ceilings, especially at night. Squirrels, by contrast, are mostly active during the day.
  • Gnaw marks on food packaging, wood, plastic, drywall or wiring.
  • Nests of shredded paper, fabric or insulation in quiet corners, wall voids, attics and crawl spaces.
  • A musky, ammonia-like smell in closed spaces.

Not sure what you’re hearing? Getting the diagnosis right matters. One family we helped had been told by another company that the noise in the attic was mice. It turned out to be a squirrel. Our free inspection tells you exactly what’s there.

Why rodents are more than a nuisance

  • Chewing damage. Rodent teeth never stop growing, so they gnaw constantly. Chewed wiring is a fire risk, and they also damage insulation, ductwork, stored items and inventory.
  • Contamination. Droppings and urine contaminate food, food-prep areas, insulation and storage. Deer mice can carry hantavirus. The CDC advises against sweeping or vacuuming dry rodent droppings, because that can put particles into the air. Wet them with disinfectant first, or have a professional handle a large mess.

How mice and rats get in

Michigan rodents move indoors as the weather cools, looking for warmth, food and shelter. They don’t need much room: a mouse can squeeze through a gap about a quarter-inch wide, and a rat through one about half an inch wide. Common entry points include:

  • Gaps where utility lines, pipes and dryer vents pass through the walls
  • Worn garage door seals and gaps around doors
  • Foundation cracks, sill-plate gaps and crawl space vents
  • Roofline gaps, soffit returns and roof vents, which give them a route into the attic
  • Openings left behind by other animals, such as a chewed squirrel hole

How our rodent removal works

1. Inspect inside and out

A technician checks the foundation, garage, utility penetrations, vents, roofline, attic and crawl space to find where rodents are getting in and where they’re active.

2. Seal the entry points

Removing rodents without closing their way in just makes room for the next ones. We seal the gaps with materials rodents can’t chew through. That’s our wildlife exclusion and prevention work, and it comes with a 5-year warranty.

3. Remove the rodents inside, 100% humanely and with no poison

Our rodent removal is 100% humane, and we never use poison. Poison doesn’t just kill mice and rats; it often leaves them to die inside your walls and ceilings, where they cause odor that can last for weeks. It’s also a risk to pets, kids and other wildlife, such as owls and hawks that eat poisoned rodents. We remove the rodents already inside humanely, and sealing the entry points is what keeps new ones out.

4. Clean up and restore

Rodents leave droppings, urine and nesting material in attics and crawl spaces. Our attic restoration and crawl space cleanup services remove the mess and the damaged insulation.

Rodent control for businesses

Restaurants, warehouses, offices, apartment buildings and other commercial properties have more doors, more deliveries and more places for rodents to hide. We help property managers and business owners find and seal entry points, and we work around your operating hours. See commercial wildlife control.

Rodent removal FAQs

Is it mice or rats?

Droppings are the easiest clue. Rat droppings are much larger than mouse droppings. Our technician will identify what you have during the free inspection.

Do you use poison?

No, never. We’re 100% humane. Poisoned rodents often die where you can’t reach them, and poison puts pets, kids and other wildlife at risk.

Can’t I just set a few traps?

Traps can catch a few mice, but they don’t fix the gaps rodents use to get in, so new ones keep arriving. Sealing the entry points is what stops the problem.

How much does rodent removal cost?

It depends on the size of the building, the number of entry points and how much cleanup is needed. The inspection and estimate are free.

Is the work guaranteed?

Yes. Our work comes with a 5-year warranty. Your technician will go over the details with your estimate.
